As you have included elections that are not borough ones here's another one.
Labour hold off BNP's by-election challenge (From The Northern Echo)
What has an election the BNP lost for a
Town Council in the North East got to do with Reditch?
I know that the BNP likes to tell its members that it now has 100 councilors+ by counting unelected powerless town councilors and in order to obfuscate the alarming decline in it's actual tally of elected representatives but this forum is just that bit more sophisticated than the back room of the Red Lion.

Precisely nothing,I'm showing you the folly of comparing one
type of election with another.

So let me get this straight. You saying that the recent results of the BNP in the West Midlands indicate that support for the Party is
rising?

You know full well that is not what I am saying, nor have I suggested it.
I have simply pointed out throughout this thread the folly of
comparing one type of election with another;read the thread again.

Anglo Staffs is quite correct that support for the BNP is falling in Reditch, sped on its way by the plank refered to earlier, and this by election is more evidence of that. You are insisting that the result of this election is taken in isolation. Presumably because this would help prevent the trend being established.
I know Winyates to some extent. The whole area consists of a handful of streets (like all Reditch districts). Its typical of a seventies estate and its population are exactly the post industrial working class the BNP should be able to take for granted. Why can't the BNP can't routinely take such wards from the Establishment?

Why can't any party rotinely take such wards from the establishment?

The main reason that parties like the BNP can't routinely take wards from the establishment is that they do not have the support of the voters.
In 2006 the BNP won Winyates, maybe there was a reason that they supported the party in that year, maybe it was just a protest vote. The fact is that in 2007 and 2008 the BNP were not even close to winning one of the other two district seats in Winyates.
They pursuaded a lot of people to vote for them once but not again.

The hardup bnp is getting a lot of milage for coming 4th in a small election.
Try not to feed the bnp trolls too much, they tend to think you are ALL supporting them.

That depends very much on your perspective.
UKIP, the Greens and the various extreme left parties have no natural constituencies, their support is relatively evenly distributed and nowhere is there enough to really challenge the Establishment. Nothing they could conceivable do can change this.
However widen the perspective and a very different picture emerges. In Scotland the SNP has systematically taken on the Establishment and defeated them, the same to a lesser extent is true of Wales and Plaid and to an even greater extent in Northern Ireland where the Establishment fear to tread at all.
Widen it still further and we see European nationalist Parties making massive inroads into the Establishment's support in their respective nations.
So the question posed by the BNP is not why they have been "successful" but why they have been unable to exploit the enormous natural constituency that have.
The BNP has a mindset which expects to be defeated. This is encouraged by the leadership which talks endlessly of the strength of opposition and little about how it can be overcome. If the Party had studied electoral tactics as much as it has Common Purpose it might be in a position to achieve something.
Most disturbing of all is that the BNP know how to win elections, it is a mere matter of concentration of resources and determined application of established tactics. Why this has not been put into effect in places such as Winyates, where the Establishment are in an almost indefensible position, is almost inexplicable.
There are two possible explanations, treachery or incompetence. Take your pick. Being of a generous nature I think it's incompetence.

A. They aren't trolls by any definition of the word.
B. They would rather not be having this conversation.
