I thought others said they were in terminal decline.

No doubt about it, in Co Durham the BNP are establishing themselves as the main opposition to Labour and this is reflected in rising vote returns. After all , the Tories will never be forgiven for the mine & shipyard closures, and Liberal Democrats have no foot soldiers to drive a campaign. Should be an interesting general election in Sedgefield Borough ( Aycliffe, Spennymoor & Chilton ). Dont be surprised if Sedgefield Borough is the 3rd BNP seat won at the next general election, after victories in Barking & Stoke.

I'll be gobsmacked if the BNP get one MP, let alone three!

I think you need at least 2 results to be able to say if they are rising or in decline. We do not know if the BNP may have got 35% last year.
Also it is only a Parish council election others are using the result as a guide to the next general Election. But as Shaun said on another thread it is pointless comparing one type of election with another.
A clearer test will be the District council By-election in Sedgefield, when they get around to calling it. But, if the BNP are sure of winning in the area why haven't they called it????????
It only needs 2 members of the electorate. Maybe they can't find 2 supporters there!

Actually it was a Town Council. That's between parish council status and district council. Obviously any political party supporter is liable to put spin on their results, noone is really fooled, well seasoned campaigners anyway, the skill is to read between the lines and assess potential and future support and prepare for new elections accordingly.

Actually, there is no difference in power or legal standing between a Parish and a Town council. As I understand it any Parish council can apply to become a TC. It is purely a mater of civic pride, a TC sounds beter than a PC.

Well I stand corrected, I wasn't aware of that. Presumably its like those Polytechnics trying to "up" themselves by calling themselves Universities.

Many of the TC's are places that were once independent boroughs, UDC's and the like. I think that TC status gives some of these old towns the right to have a Mayor again.
I can see it becoming more common as this government keeps imposing more of these bloody great UAs on the country. A stand against the faceless councillors many miles away.
