Looks like reducing speed limits has started on Mainland Europe, more will certainly follow.

There’s a very simple low cost method that we could, and SHOULD apply.

For the government to declare that all speed limits presently posted in Miles per hour are to become Kilometers per hour.

That way there’s no signage changes needed, and at a stroke we implement a speed restriction that will have a very positive impact in reducing fuel consumption.

Problem is that today's 3 hour cross country journey by car, would then take 5 hours. Road haulage deliveries would be even slower and for anyone doing daily long distance commuting, it would be hell! There would also be more accidents caused by tiredness and fatigue!

Reducing the speed on congested roads actually reduces the transit times. That’s the principle behind the successful tidal and flow rate speed limits on the M25.

I know that when I drive from my home to London, a distance of around 120 miles, my journey time at sticking to a maximum of 50 mph is only about ten to fifteen minutes longer than when I’ve made the run doing seventy whenever I could yet my fuel consumption increases from as near to six gallons as makes no odds to close to 8 gallons when I go faster.

Nowhere near as tiring when sticking to a top speed of 50 either.

It really does make sense.
