She was nicked for not having calibrated scales,not because she was selling by the pound.

When was the last time a judge sentenced someone to a conditional discharge - and then imposed a costs order of nearly £5,000?

It wouldn't happen if...

* you stole something
* you burgled someone
* you assaulted them
* you obtained money under false pretences
* you committed criminal damage
* you broke immigration rules...

Only if you sell to your own people in lbs.

Many many reasons. Anyone who frequents a pub for example should appreciate it. NAWI 2000 is another piece of great legislation.

I'll declare an interest here - this is my professional field.

Another idiot using unstamped scales? If I recall correctly, this is what every "metric martyr" has been prosecuted for so far.

Anyone want to tell me why someone should get away with using equipment that shouldn't be used for trade?

I have little sympathy for pubs - this is an industry which robs the consumer of some £235 million just by giving you a head on your beer (you ask for a pint of liquid, not froth). That's without mentioning all the publicans who rip people off by serving insufficient measures or watering down spirits etc.
