Generally asking someone if they drink beer is not a deeply personal question.

They are very comparable, I'm afraid. Firstly, it is dominated by the broad Left: liberals and socialists. So any conservative input is meaningless. It has the power to veto national governments and their legislation, regardless of the latter's political complexion. We saw that with the sanctions on Austria when the EU didn't like the democratic results of the electorate in that country, which nevertheless was supposed to be part of the 'happy family'.

So basically it is a bit like all the 'national' parliaments in the former Soviet Bloc. They decided on their legislation, and the Soviets vetoed it if they wanted to.

How often do our government's reply, when questioned, that "it's a EU Directive - there is nothing we can do"?

Maybe the levels of political intelligence you are familiar with are a bit wanting.

Can the USSR really be described as liberals? As for "conservative" input - "conservatives" are different in every different country. Yes, the EU has the power to override national legislation - but this is done on a voluntary basis (membership is voluntary) -the EU did not invade the UK and take over.

They could leave - but they don't, because they recognise the benefits the EU brings to the UK. Take the blue flag scheme. Before the EU, our beaches and rivers were disgusting - since the EU legislation came into force, we now have lots of beaches that achieve "blue flag" status, and our rivers are much cleaner.
