Labour Party General Issues>Benn says power is with EU and Tories/Labour now one party
Britannist 12:36 PM 22-10-2006
‘Tony’ Benn, the anti-EU former Cabinet Minister and Labour MP, said on the Politics Show on BBC 1 Television today at 12.26 pm “Power is not at Westminster – it is now in Brussels (the EU) and with the non-elected IMF (International Monetary Fund) and World Trade Organisation (WTO). Look at Mandelson. He was appointed as an EU Commissioner – not elected. We have a one party state in the UK. Bush, Blair and Cameron are all part of the one party system.”

Mr. Benn also said “Blair has modernised the Lords 600 years BACK to the time when the King appointed his cronies to the Lords. That is what we have now.”

As with all things Bennite, Tony Benn is the original curate's egg merchant of politics. He is right to denounce the weakness of MPs over the Executive. In fact Blair has done better than Oliver Cromwell! Blair runs everything from his bunker at No 10 conveniently pushing things past his cabinet colleagues. Cromwell at least consulted parliament!
