Labour Party General Issues>Any chance of a real contest?

Looks like John Reid's out of the running. Labour's going to get a fake contest after all!

They'll be a 'stage contest' but as you hint there won't be a real one.

At least the Tories had several differing characters with 3 or 4 potential winners.

In many ways 'Left wingers' are the worst in holding open and democratic internal party contests.

Well, you can take Labour away from Old Socialism...

I think most of them think that Gordon Brown would win a leadership contest against other candidates so they think there is no point in them getting in his bad books by standing against him (for the leadership) - because they all want jobs from him in the first Brown Cabinet.

What creeps.

It looks as if they couldn't afford a real contest even if they wanted one. They (Labour) are heavily in debt. If they can save hundreds of thousands of pounds by not having a proper leadership contest, they'll try and do it.

If Gordon Brown is chosen as Labour leader (effectively as Prime Minister) and then does not do well at the next General Election - then there could be a real contest (if he does not stand down).

Someone will bail them out.

And will be rewarded well for it.

Blair's now on the ropes. Is there anyone who could challenge Brown as a "heavyweight". I don't think so, but am I wrong?

The BBC are already calling Brown "The Prime Minister in waiting".

Blair should call a General Election immediately. That would put the cat amongst the Brownite pigeons.
