Gordon Brown quitting as Labour leader will not help the Labour Party, columnist Iain Martin has written in the Daily Telegraph.
Mr. Martin wrote regarding the Crewe-Nantwich Parliamentary By-Election (in an article published in the Telegraph last week on 22.5.2008 - the day the Crewe-Nantwich Parliamentary By-Election was held) “Labour is getting ready for the most enormous over-reaction if it loses.”
Mr. Martin pointed out that some Labour MPs have no idea how to cope with electoral defeat and that their despair about losing the By-Election could make things worse for the party.
Mr. Martin wrote that “Much of what is happening indicates a return to normal politics after the years in which Tony Blair appeared to have suspended the rules of the game” and he stated that “the rise of Cameron” could be reversed.
Mr. Martin also wrote that Prime Minister Gordon Brown should consider holding a General Election next year to avoid Conservative accusations that he is hanging on (the next General Election does not have to be held until June 2010 - EU Elections will take place in the UK in June 2009):
