Labour Party General Issues>Knife Crime

I hear that the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is going to get tough on Knife crime! Making knife carriers visit Hospitals to see where knife crime victims are treated! I have a better idea, let them see one of the convicted knife murderers hanging on the end of a rope! I know which idea would have the most lasting effect!

I don't like the sound of a 'mandatory jail sentence' for carrying a knife. I have to say I actually agree with the Lib Dems on this one - it's for a Judge to decide appropriate punishment on the merits of the case. A "one size fits all" policy is unworkable and undesirable.

I think as Iain Duncan Smith pointed out last Thursday, sentencing is only one part of dealing with the problem. I also have to say with with respect to Kernow whose views on the death penalty are honestly held that such a debate would need to take palce once we have left the EU. And I look forward to being on the opposite side of it to him even though I respect his consistant position on this.

I didn't watch Question Time on Thursday (I can't stand the children's edition). As for the death penalty - the answer is 'no' from me.

We’re not going to leave the EU, and to think otherwise is pointless.

As regards “knife crime” the use of knives isn’t the problem, the use of knives is one of the ways that The Problem manifests itself.

The Problem is the utter disregard for other people that so many young people display and actually feel, especially but not exclusively in the many slum estates that are now around the country.

David Cameron is absolutely correct when he speaks of “Broken Britain” and though damaged when New Labour came into office since being there their policies are responsible for the shattering of what had been only flawed.

In my opinion you're 100% correct on this one!

Sadly my faith in Dave the Chameleon to deliver results on the "broken society" would be absolutely zilch. This is the guy who wants to "hug a hoodie" and would probably punish knife thugs by forcing them to go green.

David Cameron stole the 'broken society' theme from Liam Fox MP (readers will remember that Liam Fox ran his leadership campaign on the 'broken society' agenda).

Any government seeking to tackle the 'broken society' will need to take tough decisions regarding welfare reform (namely dealing with the scroungers) and sink estates (ie. stop building or drastically reduce the amount of social housing.)

Tough action also needs to be taken against the parents of unruly youths.

The good majority (And I'm talking over 95%) of the problems caused in our village are caused by youths from the local council estate. I expect this situation is replicated throughout the country.

Sounds a harsh punishment to me!

Indeed Mr Cameron will be judged on results if he becomes PM which is looking ever more likely at the moment.
