Commenting on today’s annual Ofsted report showing one in ten English secondary schools are providing an inadequate education, Liberal Democrat Shadow Children, Schools and Families Secretary, David Laws MP said:
"It is deeply disturbing that one in ten secondary schools is classed as inadequate.
"A failure rate of this level jeopardises the life chances of hundreds of thousands of young people, who only get one chance at a good education at school.
"What excuse can ministers give to the parents of the thousands of children who last month started a new term in a failing secondary school?
"The Government must not respond to this report with yet more ‘command and control’ policies, which suffer from the delusion that diversity and innovation can be imposed from on high.
"We need schools with the power to innovate and an end to political meddling in the education system by establishing an independent standards authority to spread best practice and restore credibility in our exam system."
