Commenting on further details released today of this year’s GCSE results, Liberal Democrat Shadow Children, Schools and Families Secretary, David Laws MP said:
"In spite of this year’s improvement, it remains totally unacceptable that over half of our young people fail to gain five good GCSEs including English and Maths.
"Too many students who get good results are still failing to get to grips with the essential subjects of Maths and English.
"This Government has managed to undermine the credibility of the exam system while failing to deliver for the majority of students. We need a new educational standards authority and a genuine devolution of the power to innovate to all schools."
