Critchley represented that europhile 'patrician' wing of the Conservative Party (i.e. Heseltine, Heath, Patten, Meyer, Carrington, Pym, Brittan etc.) who should never have been allowed to become members of the party in the first place.
Some of that lot were/are to the left of many in today's Labour Government.
