The word 'extreme' is the best possible word for the definition; it is merely used to show that there a very strong form of patriotism abundant in nationalism. Not to make it sound "bad". Surely you can't be arguing with that?

Look down the various definitione here: nationalism - definition of nationalism by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.. They all suggest a similar thing: Extreme patriotism to the extent that followers are willing to sacrifice for their nation and believe it to be superior to others.

So if nationalism means having a sense of superiority over other nations, what is a person who merely asserts they are different but of equal merit?

Moreover nationalism as a ideology demands that all people have their nation-state to call home. So clearly this is inconsistent with an superior attitude. People who do not believe this, believe either that one nation has the right to rule others, Imperialists (or Americans if you prefer) or Internationalists. Therefore belief in the superiority of one nation over another is obviously inherently an none nationalist position.

These dictionaries are reporting what nationalism has become in the vernacular, not the political definition.

Also nationalism isn't extreme patriotism, it simply believes that patriotism should be harnessed to the common good. Although I suppose patriotism is itself quite a powerful force and to rootless internationalists it might appear "extreme".
